The Bottle

Life is different, when you see it through a bottle

End of summer

Even though it's still warm by the UK standards I am used to and the sun is still shining, the drop in temperature has been noticeable. It is the dawn of Autumn, but I'm not expecting conkers, frost and leaves falling off the trees just yet in BCN.

Street reading material

So it is Catalan book week (Setmana del Llibre en Català). I think it will be a while before I'm reading novels in Catalan, as I am still getting to grips with Castellano ('Spanish'). That said, I was impressed to see this huge book sculpture on Gran Via at Passeig de Gracia. The sculpture is is entitled Homenatge al llibre (Homage to the book) and was the work of Catalan artist and poet Joan Brossa.

The Heat

It's September in BCN and I'm still finding it hot!

Reflection

Sometimes what you see in the mirror isn't what you expected to see!

Flea Mercat Sant Antoni

Finally remembered to go to the Sant Antoni flea market on a Sunday, instead of trying to go on the wrong day!

A flea market brings people of all ages walks of life together, but the majority of the people here were Catalans of different generations. It's the type of place to remind you that some traditions don't change, despite the continual drive of technology. The market also gives you a snapshot of people's lives, showing the collecting, reading and listening tastes of BCN residents both now and in the past.

Comics, football stickers and cards featured heavily, with some stalls attracting big crowds.

There were also a huge number of postcards on offer, including some great retro ones from Barcelona.

Many stalls featured books and there were a number with DVDs, mainly feature films and porn.

There were only a couple of stalls selling records, but alongside Punk, Catalan pop and West Coast house records from the late 90s, I found this for 3€.

Mercat Sant Antoni takes place every Sunday 08:00 - 15:00 at Ronda Sant Pau/Carrer Comte d’Urgell. Nearest metro is Sant Antoni (L2 - Purple Line).

Finally used to eating at the same time of day as the locals.

Empty Bottle

Essential for life in BCN, due to the heat and undrinkable tap water. Most of my empty bottles these days seem to be water and not beer...

5 July 2011

New Glass

You realise how much more stylish your flatmate (compañero de piso) is when he breaks your glass and buys you this as a replacement!

Balcony

Presents from the neighbours (vecinos).

Sales

Sales or 'rebajas' in Spanish. Many shops visited. Bargains had. High street love embraced (no designer discounts here).
